Get Clear. Get Into Grad School. Get On With Your Life. by Dr. Khia on June 22, 2011
I never thought in my natural life that I would be sharing this on such a public forum, but hey, here goes.
I quit my job. Resigned. Bounced. Said later to the anxiety, the abusive relationship I had with my supervisors, and the psychosomatic symptoms I had been experiencing for months. Heart racing. Being disturbed in the middle of my evening and weekends at the thought of going back into the office. Stomach in knots. Sense of dread every time I saw an email from my supervisors, anticipating what kind of psychological warfare I was in store for next.
Maybe this is a cliched saying, but life really is too short. [click to continue…]

M.I.A.M.I. = Money is a major issue
I didn’t make this acronym up… I appropriated it from Cuban American rapper Pitbull. And now we’re about to remix this topic – hip hop style – and talk about how much of a major issue money is when it comes to grad school, career, your life, and beyond.
Make no mistake – in this society we live in – money is a major issue. How much of it do you want to amass to support the lifestyle you want to live?
The truth is… when it comes down to lifestyle design, the majority of us out here don’t have ambitions to have Bill Gates money. Well, we aren’t gonna turn it down if offered. Let me speak for myself – *I’m* not turning it down.
We all want to live comfortably. Part of the equation to happiness is to minimize financial stress. There are a ton of stresses looming in our daily life – mortgages, credit cards, student loans, car payments, insurance premiums, rising costs of gas just to get to work in the first place. Lifestyle design is one of those new buzzwords.
You can thank Timothy Ferris’ wildly popular book “The 4 Hour Work Week: Escape the 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich” for doing the honors.
I’m a pretty avid Barnes and Noble aisle browser and I ran across the book title right smack dab in the middle of my grad school tenure. You can see how a title like that will catch the eye, especially when you’re several years into your grad school career, your dissertation is looming, and it feels like you may *never* finish (with your sanity intact). Today’s date is May 21, 2011. Assuming that the world doesn’t end today (*sideeyes*), many of you are gonna have to start pre-planning your way to the next phase of your life.
And while people love to take positions in black and white and without any inkling of shades of gray or context (you’ve heard these folks – the “it’s dumb to go to grad school” crowd), for some of you out there, grad school will be necessary to step into your career of choice.
It’s summertime for undergraduates across the nation and NOW is the time to start making solid plans for grad school. [click to continue…]

Now that I’m out of graduate school, I’m finding that I have more time on my hands to spend on the little joys of life. You know…. like leisurely reading Chick Lit.
A friend of mine recommended that I read “Something Borrowed” so that we could watch the movie over popcorn, Pepsi, and the big screen at the movie theatre. I have to admit, I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and totally consumed it from cover to cover in just a few days. THIS is how I like my drama – in black and white and printed on dog-eared pages.
I found out that I related a lot to the protagonist, Rachel. Not because I’m a fiance-stealing-hussy (I’m not, by the way, and I did have some compassion for her love triangle situation and dealing with that insufferable “best friend” Darcy), but because, here she was – the proverbial Smart Girl who had studied hard, graduated from a top university, had an ultra super status-y career, and was hating every minute of her job.
